New TWEENS program and Feeding the Hungry

On Friday January 13^th, we launched a new program just for Tweens – those kids in grades 5 – 8 who are getting too big for the activities we do with the little ones and getting them ready for what comes with high school.

This was another joint event with Our Savior’s Lutheran. We had 12 kids participate – 6 from Immanuel, 1 from VBS 2022, and 5 from Our Savior’s. We also had 4 adult helpers from Immanuel and 3 from Our Savior’s.

We had a bit of an ice-breaker game, and then the kids made 200 sandwiches for the First Baptist Inter-Church bagged lunch program. 35 Chicken, 35 Ham, 35 Ham and Cheese, 20 Cheese, and 75 Egg Salad. The sandwiches went in the fridge, and the kids opened up all the lunch bags and put in a nutri-grain bar and a juice box. The drew or wrote ‘blessings’ that we photocopied and placed in the bag lunches.

The kids then went up to the multi-purpose room on the 2^nd floor and watched a movie, along with snacks galore. The movie was Archie – a story about a robotic dog and was actually filmed in Saskatchewan.

The feedback from the kids was very positive, with comments such as 'Can we do this every week?'

On Saturday, 8 adults from Immanuel loaded the sandwiches and a Baby Bel Cheese into the bags, then carted everything to First Baptist. 58 people showed up, and all the sandwiches either were eaten or taken home for friends and family members who couldn't make it in person. We took the few socks that were in the sock box, and they all were taken with thanks as well. There were a few bananas left at the end, and they were taken to the Cathedral fridge.

We are planning to run the Tweens program once a month during the winter, and then we’ll see where we go from there. The next one is set for Friday, February 3^rd and we are planning to make cookies for the First Baptist lunch program, and then have a board games night.

The next day that we are hosting the First Baptist lunch program is Saturday May 6^th.
